Creating Meaningful and Differentiated Choice Making Opportunities
Limited Capacity seats available

This session dives deep into how to teach choice making skills to students, covering both theory and practice. We begin with an overview of the skill of choice making, including the components that go into it and important factors to successfully promote these skills. We then outline a detailed, step-by-step roadmap of how to progressively develop choice making skills by breaking it down into small, achievable steps. The roadmap begins with very early cause and effect responses and progresses all the way to making complex choices from multiple on-screen, abstract options. As we follow this progression, we consider how to implement appropriate practice opportunities at each stage, considering a variety of methods to cover a wide range of individual needs based on both physical and cognitive skills. We discuss an assortment of Assistive Technology devices and ways that they can be employed to make and communicate choices. The devices include: real world items; picture cards; switch communicators; environmental control units (using switches, iPads, and eye gaze); adapted toys (using switches, iPads, and eye gaze); AAC devices; fixed content, accessible software; and personalizable framework software. This section covers a range of both physical and cognitive ability levels; individual need and level of ability will determine which device is best for the user and how it can best be used to meet different goals. This section considers how different devices can be used in different ways to best meet individualized communication needs and abilities.

Supporting Families and Individuals through Integrated Supports
Limited Capacity seats available

Individuals and families access an array of integrated supports to achieve a good life. We will discuss how using the principles of the LifeCourse Framework assists families, individuals, and professionals in identifying and creating pathways to achieve successful and meaningful outcomes that lead to their vision of a good life.

The Charting the LifeCourse Framework was created BY FAMILIES to help individuals and families of all abilities and all ages develop a vision for a good life, think about what they need to know and do, identify how to find or develop supports, and discover what it takes to live the lives they want to live. Individuals and families may focus on their current situation and stage of life but may also find it helpful to look ahead to think about life experiences that will help move them toward an inclusive, productive life in the future.
Even though it was originally created for people with disabilities, this universally-designed framework may be used by any person or family making a life plan, regardless of life circumstances.
There are several guiding principles in the LifeCourse Framework. For this session, we will focus mainly on the principle of Integrated Supports. In the past, conversations about supporting people with disabilities and their families mainly revolved around the supports offered by the disability service system. When in reality individuals and families access an array of integrated supports to achieve the envisioned good life, including those that are publicly or privately funded and based on eligibility; community supports that are available to anyone; relationship-based Supports; technology; and that take into account the assets and strengths of the individual and family.

The LifeCourse Frameworks help families, as well as organizations and policymakers, understand that we ALL access a variety of supports to make it through our daily lives. The core principle of the LifeCourse Framework is that All people have the right to live, love, work, play and pursue their life aspirations in their community.

Can You Read Me Now?
Limited Capacity seats available

Technologies using automatic speech recognition (ASR) in apps and software on mobile devices, computers and even news broadcasts, continue to expand their reach. This workshop will give you an overview of the pros and cons of this technology, demonstrations of apps designed for speech-to-text translation, examples of subtitles within other applications, suggestions for integrating with remote microphone technology and resources to access later.

I will start with a brief overview of how speech-to-text technologies (STT) are currently being used and help the audience consider possible future applications.

Next, I will discuss tools to maximize use of STT including checklists and feedback forms to determine if a student is ready for STT. Then, I will highlight some accessories and remote microphone technology options to provide the best possible input signal.

We will then review various app-based and web-based options for STT, discussing features for each of them. This includes discussion about which situations are best suited to that particular technology. Apps to be reviewed (though some may be added at a later date) include: Microsoft – Translator, PowerPoint and Skype / Google - Live Transcribe and Slides / Interact Streamer / Clips / Ava / webcaptioner.com.

Lastly, we will talk about the paucity of data looking at the efficacy and validity of using STT compared to using live captioners. There will be discussion of some possible metrics and current studies.
